This course provides an overview of the field of special education, focusing on the foundational knowledge and skills necessary for future public school teachers. Students will explore the historical, legal, and ethical aspects of special education, including key legislation such as the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). The course will cover the characteristics and needs of students with various disabilities and neurodiversions, as well as effective instructional strategies, classroom management techniques, and skill development to practice collaboration with families and other professionals. Prerequisite(s): A grade of “B” or better in EDU 130 .
