The Early Childhood Education Center (ECEC) on the OTC Springfield Campus at 936 North Hampton serves OTC students, faculty, staff and the community. The center is licensed by the State of Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services for children ages 2 to 5. The center is accredited by Missouri Accreditation of Programs for Children and Youth. The Early Childhood Education Center features experienced teachers with professional backgrounds in early childhood education or child development. As a training facility for the college’s Early Childhood Development program, students help maintain a low child to teacher ratio. Families, teachers and staff work together to make childcare a positive learning experience for each child, enhancing both a positive self-image and self-esteem.
The Early Childhood Education Center plans developmentally appropriate activities which encourage and stimulate the cognitive, creative, emotional, social and physical development of each child in a safe, secure and nurturing atmosphere. Opportunities are provided for exploration and discovery in a variety of activities such as learning centers, large and small group activities, music, art, cooking, field trips and problem solving. Indoor and outdoor experiences enhance the development and coordination of large and small muscles. Teachers guide children in appropriate social interaction which help the children develop self-confidence in relationships. Families may actively participate in their child’s learning experience through voluntary participation in classroom activities, classroom visits and parent-teacher meetings.
Daytime childcare services are provided according to the college academic calendar, during the fall and spring semesters, when classes are in session. Hours are 7:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. Enrollment is based ongoing but primarily established at the beginning of each semester based on availability with full-time and part-time slots that are filled from an active waiting list.
